This morning I rode my mtn bike along with Kim on her run.  She needed to do 10 miles to keep up with her training program but we were at her parent’s house, away from her running buddy Beth. (more…)

Best x-ray experience I’ve ever had.  No waiting and I ended up with a CD with my x-rays on it.  How cool is that!?!  Turns out nothing is broken (sigh of relief) but there’s a separation of my right collar bone that the radiologist called out so it’s off to the orthopedic surgeon for a specialists opinion.  The bike was easier to diagnose. After a couple of Advil and a bath with some of Kim’s bath salts I was “feeling no pain” last night. Even my foot stopped hurting. I slept fine and with only a few “ginger roll overs” I can remember. Had kind of a big meeting at work today so I had to get up and iron a shirt before getting the girls up. (more…)

65th and E. Lake Sammamish ParkwayIt’s been a rough couple of rides for my commuting.  Friday, crash in the rain.  Monday, broken derailer.  Wednesday, hit by a car.  Just 1 mile from the office as I came into Redmond today, I got hit by a car making a left into a parking lot.  I saw it coming a split second before it happened and knew I was going to get hit and go down. Picture of the Freddy Fender Speedez from Planet BikeOn our rounds closing up the house last night Kim looked out on the front porch and noticed a package - my fenders had arrived. I had the Ciocc and bike stand in the family room earlier in the night fixing the jockey pulley and would have loved to put them on but resisted doing any more than checking wheel clearances at 11:30 PM. That meant that tonight once the girls were in bed and dishes were done, it was time to enter the next stage of comfort for my commute. (more…)

When the princess rescued the princeThis morning started out a little odd. A phone call at 7:15 informed us the local public schools were canceled due to vandalism of the school district buses overnight. That threw Kim’s day into a re-planning state and served to distract me from my appointed duties - getting the girls ready for school. I did manage to accomplish my task, though in a rather random order that elevated my stress level higher than necessary. I was sure I would forget something for my commute - no checklist yet. Today I went to SingleTrack to get new tires for the Ciocc and my Mtn Bike. After my ‘glass inspired’ flat on Friday I decided it was really time to get some heavier duty tires for the Ciocc and since I never ride my Mtn Bike off road I wanted something with a less aggressive tread. (more…)

Changing a flat tire…Well, it looked like luck was smiling on me when I left work tonight on my evening commute. While it had rained during the day, the clouds were breaking up and the roads were drying up. It was a bit blustery but only leaves were falling from the sky. I thought I might make it a dry round trip for today’s commute. Excellent I thought. (more…)

Slow, aerobic base training hereSince my last post I’ve done a little research into aerobic base training.  Enough to know that most coaches and trainers admit it’s hard to do.  The intensity level is so low it’s hard to get someone who is looking to improve their performance to believe riding so ‘lightly’ is actually going to improve their speed or endurance. Cyclist wearing multiple heart rate monitorsIt’s October and I don’t have any more cycling goals for the year other than keeping up with bike commuting and the occasional longer weekend ride. All season long my average HR has been higher than I’d like it. I’ve heard folks talk about doing lots of base miles at a low HR as a training technique to raise their aerobic threashold. (more…)
