While the girls watched season 2 of “Ben 10″ on DVD I took the handlebars off the Fuso and attempted to remove the tape so that I could re-use it on the new bars.  It was not to be.  It quickly became apparent that the tape had been on there for a while.  After getting the tape off, then came off the break levers and time to mount up the new bars.  Took me two tries to get the stem threaded around the curves of the new “anotomic” bars but a screwdriver to pry the stem open and noticing that the stem has a “narrow” spot that should face the inside of the curve and I got it in there.

Mounted the break levers and then it was time for lunch and a trip to the local bike shop.  It was fairly easy to get the girls into the car for a trip to the bike shop.  It can be difficult if they have planned a “stay at home all day day” but easy today.  When we arrived at the shop, they were putting up a  sign in the window that they were closing early due to “flooding” but I managed to sneak in to buy handlebar tape so I could out the new bars.  Turned out they didn’t have Cinelli ‘yellow’ bar tape.  Veronica agreed with me that the Bontrager ‘yellow’ was too green.  I settled on “Yellow & Black Marble” Bontrager tape.  After a quick stop at the bakery next door for cookies for the girls we headed back home.

I  got started wrapping the tape and remembered it’s one of those things you really need to pay attention to if you’re going to do it right.  I didn’t pay much attention.  The first side I wrapped I didn’t do the bar end part right and it was very hard to get the plug in.  I think I also wrapped it counter-clockwise and should have done clockwise to get the right end up at the stem.  Whoever had wrapped the bars before me had done a really good job.  After I was done I looked at the bike.  I hate the tape.  The bars are anodized black, the stem is polished aluminum and the tape really doesn’t bring anything together.  So, I guess it’s fine that I did a crappy job wrapping them since I’ll be redoing them in the next few weeks.  I think I’ll go with black bar tape and see what it looks like.

After I got them all wrapped up, I took the Fuso up stairs to the master bedroom so I could watch the Superbowl while I did my “pedaling technique” ride.  I wasn’t sure how it would go - would the girls bug me? would the vibrations of the trainer rock the house? - but I enjoyed my ride on the road yesterday so much that I wanted to keep it up.

I went without the video and set the polar CS200 up to beep every minute to keep things going.  10 minute warmup, 4x 1min spin-up, 1min recovery, 3 minute recovery, 3x 2min per leg ILT with 2 min recovery, 10 minute cool down.

Kim came home in the middle of the workout and came up stairs looking around to find the noise.  She described it as sounding like the “background noise from 2001″ downstairs.  Wish I could have heard it.

I’m getting better at the ILT drills which is good.  I’m going to keep doing them, hopefully throughout the while season.
