It always comes early. 5:30 am. I thought I had done a good job of getting ready for the ride. I mounted my headlight on my helmet so I could see when I left in the dark. I had pre-mixed my bottles of Perpetium. I even tracked down my Digital Hero camera and charged up the battery for the head lamp. I got out of bed, the nice warm bed, and headed down stairs. As I noticed it was raining I decided to take the Fuso. As I got it from the Garage I realized it only had one water bottle cage. And that began the unplanned phase of prep for my ride. Oh, it was hard to get out of bed this morning. My plan was my first 50 miler. I wanted as much time as possible for it and I needed to be home by 10 AM to take the girls to swimming lessons. That meant getting up at 5:30 to be on the road at 6:00. It took all my willpower to not roll over when the alarm went off. Read the rest of this entry »

I got to sleep in a bit and didn’t have to take the Ferry for the Chilly Hilly. I took the family to Grandma and Grandpa’s house and drove up from Silverdale to Kingston. It was nice to sleep in and not have to walk on the ferry decks in cleats. I did forget a water bottle so I lucked out that the Kingston registration tent was right in front of BI Cycles. Not only did they have a water bottle but they had Hammer Nutrition products so I got a packet of HEED as well. All set, now to find Brad. Read the rest of this entry »

When I started reading other cyclists blogs back in June, it didn’t take me long to find Dave Moulton’s blog. His story immediately struck a cord with me because he was building his Fuso bikes right when I was getting into the sport. He writes about frame building like Tiger writes about golf - with a love of the art and a mastery few are able to achieve. Read the rest of this entry »

After laying on the couch last night feeling totally drained from my ride, I headed out again today but decided to stick to the flats. That meant Maloney’s Grove to Earnie’s Grove, Renick to Millpond and back. No hills to speak of. I didn’t fuel up before the ride and I didn’t take anything but water with me and I felt it on the way back from Snoqualmie. When all I can think about is all the food I’m going to eat when I get home, I know I didn’t fuel well on the ride.

I love it when Kim pushes me out of the house for a ride. It makes me feel like she knows it means a lot to me and wants me to do it. After doing some cleanup around the house and outside (3 weeks of snow on the ground makes for a lot of dog, ah, waste, to scoop up) I transfered the fenders from the Ciocc to the Fuso, got layered up, and headed out. It was, ah, going to rain so I put on my rain gear top to bottom. Read the rest of this entry »

While the girls watched season 2 of “Ben 10″ on DVD I took the handlebars off the Fuso and attempted to remove the tape so that I could re-use it on the new bars. It was not to be. It quickly became apparent that the tape had been on there for a while. After getting the tape off, then came off the break levers and time to mount up the new bars. Took me two tries to get the stem threaded around the curves of the new “anotomic” bars but a screwdriver to pry the stem open and noticing that the stem has a “narrow” spot that should face the inside of the curve and I got it in there. I told Kim this morning I wanted to ride today. I meant on the trainer (since I didn’t get on the trainer all week). Coming back from the birthday party she offered to stay home from the barn with the girls so I could go for a ride. It wasn’t raining, or snowing. The roads were clear and drying out. I hadn’t considered going on the road, I imagined a mess from the snows on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday this week. As I drove home I debated, “No, you go to the barn, I was planing on riding on the trainer.” She pushed back, “You should go out. Really.” Read the rest of this entry »
